Our Abakus Enrichment Journey
Abakus Math and Science Enrichment was founded in 2017 by Jeanne-Mari Frenzel and Lize Maree. The first branch opened in January 2017 in the Old Post Office building in Stellenbosch, where Abakus supported 30 learners with a team of just two members.
In 2018, the Stellenbosch branch moved to its current home in the Valerida Centre.
In under five years, Abakus Enrichment grew from serving 30 learners to working with more than 300, expanding from a team of 2 to a dedicated group of 11 teachers.
In 2024, Meandri van Rheede van Oudtshoorn joined as a director and co-owner. Together, she and Jeanne-Mari expanded Abakus’ offerings to include a wide range of workshops, bootcamps, and community upliftment projects.
As we celebrate a decade of service in 2026, we are proud of the growth and impact Abakus Enrichment has achieved in Stellenbosch and across South Africa.
- Over the past 10 years, we have tutored more than 1,100 learners through private lessons, small group classes, and large-scale educational projects.
- Our team has grown to 12 passionate members, collectively holding 21 qualifications.
- We now support learners across three South African provinces as well as Namibia.
- From 2021 to 2024, we helped more than 130 matric learners achieve A and B symbols in Mathematics and Science.
At Abakus Enrichment, we are incredibly proud of our journey, the communities we serve, and the family we have built. As we step into our 10th anniversary, we are more excited than ever for the future and the opportunities still to come.

We work toward achieving our vision by:
- Employing tutors with formal teacher training/experience, who understand content in relation to pedagogy.
- Creating a business that promotes effective communication between management, tutors, learners, parents and teachers through operational fluency.
- Engaging in the community through effective marketing so that we operate at full capacity and establish a reputation of innovation and expertise.
- Providing a quality service of academic and emotional support driven by our love for math and science in conjunction with our passion to help learners grow, develop and achieve their goals.
- Providing support in line with established curricula but tailored to the individual needs of our learners.
- Providing alternative, enriching academic experiences that will promote understanding of subject matter.
- Promoting the enjoyment of the of Math and Science through linking content to the relevance and application in the real world.
- Promoting confidence and academic performance that is sustainable, through a process of increased preparedness that will reduce anxiety in learners and parents.
- All of this achieved through creating a team that is aligned with the business values, vision and purpose.
